2026-05-19 RESOLUTION (Pass C follow-through, claude/cowork-pass-c-followthrough-2026-05-19)

The discrepancy is resolved via direct PDF inspection. Both dates that appear in the document are real and refer to different events; for a doc_type: letter, the canonical date is the date the letter was issued.

Evidence (from the PDF itself, SHA256 c834803742ad2221595242950cf290c1c94b7a5eb07ad3a7e638d53242421f0d):

  • Letter date (Selig's letterhead, PDF p. 1): "Office of the Commissioner — MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL — ALLAN H. (BUD) SELIG, Commissioner of Baseball — June 20, 2011". The salutation reads "Dear Frank:" and the body opens "Over the past several months, you have submitted to my Office..." — characteristic outgoing-correspondence framing dated to its signing date.
  • PDF CreationDate / ModDate: Thu Jul 21 15:09:41 2011 EDT (about a month after the letter was signed; this is the date of the exhibit-filing scan in the Dodgers Chapter 11 proceedings, not the letter).
  • Exhibit-stamp on PDF p. 1 (side margin): reads "PLAINTIFF'S EXHIBIT" with a partial case-number fragment "CA NO. 11-/~o.l 0" (the OCR garbled portions are consistent with the D. Del. Dodgers Chapter 11 docket number 11-12010) and a blank "EX. NO." line.
  • Dodgers bankruptcy timeline: Chapter 11 petition filed June 27, 2011 (D. Del. Case 11-12010 — see documents/franchise-finance/2011-06-27_filing_dodgers-chapter-11-bankruptcy.md in archive). A July 21, 2011 exhibit-filing scan, three weeks into the bankruptcy proceedings, fits the natural sequence.

Resolution: the letter is dated June 20, 2011. The July 21, 2011 date in the prior filename was the date the document was first scanned and filed as an exhibit in the bankruptcy — a real and recordable date, but not the canonical date for the underlying letter.

Per NAMING.md §2.1, the filename date must match metadata date_precision and date. Since metadata already had date: "2011-06-20" and date_precision: "day", the filename should reflect the same date. The prior filename's 2011-07-21 was a deliberate choice (the prior session's file.processing_notes cited "naming sortability") but that is not a NAMING.md-permitted exception.

Actions applied on resolution:

  • Filename renamed 2011-07-21_letter_selig-rejecting-fox-tv-deal-to-mccourt.{pdf,md}2011-06-20_letter_selig-rejecting-fox-tv-deal-to-mccourt.{pdf,md} per NAMING.md §2.1. Old filename preserved in file.previous_filenames. SHA256 of the PDF unchanged.
  • Metadata date already "2011-06-20" (no change needed).
  • file.processing_notes rewritten to record both dates and their distinct meanings (letter signed June 20, 2011; exhibit-filed July 21, 2011) rather than the prior "naming sortability" framing.
  • INDEX row updated (date column 2011-07-212011-06-20; slug; row note).
  • Cross-references in documents/franchise-finance/2004_memo_commissioner-dodgers-mccourt-purchase.md and documents/franchise-finance/2011-06-27_filing_dodgers-chapter-11-bankruptcy.md updated.

Status: this discrepancy is resolved. The document remains at needs_review overall (single confirmation source via Wayback; STANDARDS.md §2.4 two-source confirmation still pending; full substantive content review of the 11-page letter also pending).

The discrepancy

  • Filename date prefix: 2011-07-21_letter_selig-rejecting-fox-tv-deal-to-mccourt (day-precision: July 21, 2011)
  • Metadata date field: "2011-06-20", date_precision: "day" (June 20, 2011)
  • One-month delta between filename and metadata.

Per NAMING.md §2.1, the filename date must match the metadata date. Here they disagree on the day-precise value.

Possible explanations to verify

Either could be correct depending on what the date actually represents:

  • Letter dated June 20, 2011: Selig's letter to McCourt rejecting the proposed $3B Fox TV deal — this is the date Selig signed/sent the letter.
  • July 21, 2011: The date the letter was filed as an exhibit in the Dodgers bankruptcy (the bankruptcy began June 27, 2011; a court filing on July 21 attaching the letter would be a plausible date).

Both could appear in the document depending on how the metadata's date_type is interpreted. The current metadata has date_type not explicitly set in my read — should be signed if the date is when Selig signed the letter, issued if when it was published in the docket, or filed if it's the filing date.

Verification path

  1. Open the PDF and check both:
    • The letter's salutation/closing date (Selig's signature line, top header)
    • Any court exhibit cover page or filing stamp
  2. Decide which date is canonical for date based on document character.
  3. If the filename is wrong, rename per NAMING.md §5 preserving old filename in file.previous_filenames.
  4. If the metadata is wrong, update the metadata.
